Why does it need to be ‘public’ funding? Why can’t private enterprise or better yet, enterprising educators form for-profit learning centers that leap frog traditional academia in teaching to the creative pancake masses? This is a model that can and does work n many disciplines (in our case, music education). It can also work in areas like math, science, medicine, engineering etc. where students access very specific information or skill sets delivered by educators paid handsomely to develop its format and the learning/assessment process. This direction is very good for students, very good for enterprising educators and business…and very bad for the old school ways that are currently in place at ivory towers around the world.
